Australian War Memorial Eastern Precinct represents an uncompromising level of quality design, honouring the express wishes of veterans as the final stage of the national memorial in Canberra.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Officially opened in 1941, the Australian War Memorial is an iconic place of national significance, welcoming more than one million visitors each year to honour the service of Australians.
The redevelopment will modernise and expand the Memorial’s galleries and facilities, enabling it to tell the continuing story of Australia’s contemporary contribution.
Key elements of the project include a new southern entrance, refurbishment of the main building, a new Anzac Hall connected via a glazed link, and an extension of the Bean Building to integrate research collections and services. Carefully integrated with the existing landscape, the design preserves the heritage façade of the main building.
SCOPE OF WORK
TTW’s engineering scope included:
- Designing complex subterranean structural systems to support a new public entry beneath a live heritage site
- Delivering civil works to integrate arrival courtyards, the Parade Ground, and circulation routes within a constrained footprint
- Planning traffic and access to ensure seamless connections between the new entrance, existing car parks, and future site upgrades
A standout structural feature is the off-form concrete soffit and curved beams supporting the forecourt above. TTW’s structural design ensured a seamless connection to the existing building and original forecourt, reinstated with the Oculus inspired by the Hall of Memory’s dome.
