West Gate Tunnel is one of Australia's most significant transport infrastructure projects, with TTW delivering complex temporary road diversion works to keep Melbourne moving throughout a $10B construction program.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The West Gate Tunnel is a $10B Victorian Government infrastructure project managed by CPB Contractors and John Holland, completing in 2025. TTW was engaged to provide detailed design of the Mackenzie Road realignment, including the Simms Road, Dahlenberg Road, and Footscray Road interfaces, to facilitate construction of the Mackenzie Road on-ramp at the Northern Portal of the West Gate Tunnel. The temporary road diversion was subject to a full VicRoads and Independent Reviewer review process, requiring the same level of rigour applied to permanent road infrastructure.
SCOPE OF WORK
TTW provided Civil, Traffic, and TTW Advance services for the temporary works package. The design involved complex geometry and vertical alignment to navigate through and over major crane slabs and construction compounds across an active construction environment. Given the significant grade transitions between proposed and existing levels, the carriageway was subject to both a slope stability analysis and an aquaplaning review.
To maintain free-flowing traffic throughout the duration of the works, the design was delivered in numerous stages, allowing construction activity to proceed without disruption to the travelling public.
